Augusta Data Storage Releases 2017 Environmental Report

It’s hard to believe that 2018 is already here. 2017 was a pretty big year for our organization, our parent company, Ellefson Transportation Group, celebrated 50 years, and Augusta Data Storage turned 25! In addition, we also saw the completion of our new records storage facility, which will allow us space to store over 100,000 more records in a NARA (National Archives and Records Administration) Compliant facility. On top of all these things, we are proud to report that our secure shredding operation saw over an 18% increase in paper shredded during the 2017 calendar year. That means some HUGE increases in our environmental savings for the year.

In just 12 months we shredded over 385.56 TONS of paper, which works out to over 770,000 lbs. These totals represent secure shred pick-ups from our local customers, community shred events and drop-off shredding, and works out to an average of over 64,000 lbs of paper shredded each month. That’s a lot of shredding. After all our paper pulp is shredded and baled, it is picked up by Georgia Pacific and is recycled to make new products, which allows us to create a substantial environmental savings. These statistics represent the savings from recycling paper products, versus the use of raw materials for the production of new “virgin” paper products. Check out the infographic below for a run-down of our annual environmental savings!

Did you know that Augusta Data Storage also offers E-Solutions, which provide area businesses and residents a safe and secure way to dispose of their end-of-life electronic devices? According to a recent article from National Geographic, the average American family of four creates 176 lbs. of e-waste every year. By offering an e-solutions program which shreds and recycles old or out-dated electronics, we can help you protect your information and protect the environment. Recycling e-waste creates substantial savings in resources and energy, when compared to creating or sourcing items like aluminum and other minerals from scratch. Recycling e-scrap also helps to eliminate health and environmental hazards, due to the amount of non-biodegradable and toxic components inside of our electronic devices.

In 2017 Augusta Data Storage collected and processed over 29,187 pounds of e-scrap which was securely shredded and then recycled, right here in the U.S. to ensure that the hazardous and non-biodegradable materials could be repurposed or contained appropriately.
